m to put her in her bed. She then assumed that the other kids were in the attic sleeping and had simply forgotten to shut down the house. She then locked the door, closed the curtains and turned off the lights and went back to her room and went back to sleep.
At around 1:00 am as Jennie was trying to fall back into sleep, she heard what sounded like an object hitting the roof and then rolling down along the side of the house. It was about 1:30 am and Jennie began to smell smoke. She shook George to wake him up immediately and hurried to the doorway of the room. The hallway was indulged with smoke and flames covered the stairway leading up to the other five children’s bedrooms. George and Jennie yelled up the stairs for everybody to escape the house immediately. Jennie and George were able to get out of the house with four of their children: Marion, Sylvia, John and George Jr. The family shouted at the house, expecting that the other five children would wake the other five kids that were upstairs. They didn’t hear anything from the other children and could not go upstairs to get them because the staircase was covered in flames.
The flames developed quickly and blocked George from returning into the house. Next, the family attempted to call for help yet their telephone did not work so one of the children raced to a neighbor's and called the police. Thinking the best way to get the five kids out is get them out through a window on the top floor, George dashed around to the side of the house where they usually kept a ladder. The family attempted to find their ladder to use to get the other kids out of the room upstairs. It was usually leaning against the side of the house however it was missing at that very moment which confused everyone.
George had endeavored to spare them, breaking a window to reemerge the house, cutting a swath of skin from his arm. He could see nothing through the smoke and fire, which had cleared through the ma...
