nsportation by using maps, timetables, and looking at fares. The language instruction for this lesson was to give suggestions, provide their justifications, and also to think about the degrees of giving a suggestion (e.g., should, ought to, could, may want to, etc.).
The theme for this particular lesson is housing, where the students will learn how to read and extract information from housing advertisements. The language target will build upon the previous class’s language target (i.e., suggestion phrases and justifications), but focus more on the responses to the suggestions (i.e., phrases to express agreement or disagreement).
This class will help prepare for the following week’s travel themed class where students will use travel brochures to help them to create a travel itinerary. In the travel lesson, students will use the suggestion phrases they learned in the transportation class and the agreement and disagreement phrases they learned in the housing class.
II. LESSON PLAN
A. Format of the Lesson
When thinking about how to format my lesson, I considered both the environmental conditions and learner conditions.
For environmental conditions, I thought about my larger context (i.e., ESL), time constraints, class size, and class resources when thinking about how to format my lesson. Thinking about the larger context helped me choose and specify the topic. I wanted to choose a topic that the students were likely to encounter in the ESL context, and at the same time, one that was practical. This led me to the idea of having students find a place to live using housing ads. The second environmental factor that I considered was my time constraints.
