Social media is widely used in today’s society. It all started as just a way to stay in touch with friends and family. When social media first came out, not everyone was on it. Social media was new, and people barely knew how to use it. After a few years, social media began to grow. Now social media is becoming more and more addictive. Social media has had good effects. However, the bad effects outweigh all the good. Is social media ruining lives?
It doesn’t take much to be on social media. There are many apps for social media: snapchat, Instagram, facebook, and many more. Social media is so insanely popular today due to five major points: a place to meet and keep in touch with people, a user-friendly design, it’s free, helps people find jobs, and it is also used by businesses for the promotion of the company (Baer). Having said this most kids nowadays are constantly looking on social media or even posting on it. Social media is used regularly by billions. 78% of 18-year-olds to 24-year-olds use snapchat or instagram and 71% of that admit to visiting these sights multiple times a day (Smith and Anderson). Social media is alluring in people of all ages by providing people easy access to the outside world at one finger tip. They also provide ads that keep popping up at random times that appeal to the user’s eye, maybe by sight or sound. People are shown new things every time they log into any social media account they are on, persuading them to stay logged in. Although people use social media for good reasons, it can have tremendous effects on us that we may not yet see due to all the positive effects. People are blinded by the good, like using it as a way to talk to a significant other that is far away or a friend that moved away so you keep up with each other by social media.
