Reflection Essay: Introduction to Psychology

Taking this introductory psychology class has been enlightening, to say the least. I have developed insights into many areas of my personal life that I just didn’t realize were affected in a certain way by my behavior. Personally, I have developed a better understanding of myself overall. I realized that I fit to a certain degree into the type A behavior pattern that consists of a cluster of behaviors involving hostility, competitiveness, time urgency and feeling driven (Feldman, 2015, p.431). More importantly, I now recognize that this behavior pattern has a strong link to coronary heart disease but since I am not completely type A, there’s no certainty that I am at risk of developing CAD. Also, I now have a solid understanding about the roots of my traits and how certain characteristics that I possess are influenced by both nature (genetics) and nurture (environment). Prior to taking this class, I held the opinion that nurture had the greatest influence on behavioral characteristics and traits but now I’ve seen that nature and nurture both work hand in hand to determine behavior. My thoughts and feelings concerning some acts that society considers bad has changed. For example, I used to think that drug addiction wasn’t that big of a deal and once started could be stopped at any time but after reading about drug use, I realize that people can not only be psychological dependent on a drug but also they could also depend on the drugs physiologically (Feldman, 2015, p.153). Also, contrary to my former opinions, I learnt that engaging in solitary sex (masturbation) shouldn’t be treated with attitudes that reflect negative views of yesteryear. Masturbation as described by the book is a healthy, legitimate and harmless sexual activity and is a means of learning about one’s own sexuality and a way of discovering changes in one’s body such as the emergence of cancerous lumps (Feldman, 2015, p.304).
