Solitary Confinement: Torture or Justice

Solitary confinement is a mandated arrangement set up by prisons which seek to punish prisoners by the use of isolated confinement, which can cause a dwindling of prisoners mental health. Not only is solitary confinement isolated and causes prisoners mental health to dwindle, but it has also been described to be inhumane. There are several other terms which refer to solitary confinement such as, There are several other terms which refer to solitary confinement such as, administrative segregation, supermax facilities (this is due to the fact that supermax facilities only have solitary confinement), the hotbox, the hole, and the security housing unit (SHU). Solitary confinement is a place where no inmate wants to go(depending on the inmate) due to its complete isolation, which can make any sane person change in a short amount of time. Why are prisoners having such a high rate of mental illness? What does this have to do with solitary confinement?
In the United States alone, there are more than 80,000 men, women, and children in solitary confinement and this are in prisons which doesn’t include jails, juvenile facilities, and immigrant detention centers. While researching the number of children in solitary confinement, there is not an exact number that could be found, but either way, any child thrown into solitary confinement will come out a different person. When someone is a juvenile the first years of their lives are crucial parts of what makes that child apart of our society. If they are thrown into Solitary Confinement at such a young age, then they are bound to get a mental illness. There are countless articles on people's experience in solitary confinement, which does include juveniles. There are percentages that show the number of men and women in solitary confinement, race in solitary(in men's prisons only), the states with the largest percentages of prisoners in solitary in the United States alone and lastly, how long inmates...
