In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby, who was born as James Gatz, was the son of poor farmers in North Dakota. He was determined to be successful in life, so he learned manners from Dan Cody, on a yacht. Gatsby saved Mr. Cody from a storm and then was employed by him. In addition to being wealthy, Gatsby’s American Dream was to be with Daisy Buchanan and marry her. The dream he should have had was to get a job that was not illegal and to find a person who loved him for him. If Gatsby followed that, Daisy would see that he is trying to straighten up his life and ultimately Gatsby would be with Daisy.
Jay Gatsby’s American Dream was to repeat the past and to be with Daisy. Gatsby says, “Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” (Fitzgerald 110). Gatsby was a soldier and met Daisy at a party; Daisy did not know that he was poor because there was no sign that he was poor. Gatsby lied to Daisy and told her that he was rich and that he could support her. When Gatsby went to war, the two sent letters back and forth. However, Gatsby noticed that Daisy’s letters had changed and she had stopped sending them as often.
When Gatsby returned from the war, he got into the illegal business, that was how he got rich. Now he had part of his American Dream; he just needed the other part which was Daisy. Gatsby felt married to Daisy from the beginning, so he could not let her go that easy. Daisy got married to Tom Buchanan, and they had a child. However, Gatsby was willing to forget about that because Daisy was his ultimate goal. He never gave up on his dream for as long as he lived, he chased it to the end. Gatsby’s American Dream should’ve been to find a woman who truly loved him for him and to find a real job so that he can provide for her.
