In September 1987, Dr. Carson successfully separated twin boys that were conjoined by their heads. In 1994, Dr. Carson unsuccessfully tried to separate twin girls in South Africa, but in 1997, he successfully separated conjoined twin boys in Zambia. Carson’s biggest challenge came in 2003 when he traveled to Southeast Asia to separate twin adult women. The surgery was unsuccessful but a valuable learning lesson.
Dr. Carson’s operations gained media attention and opened doors for him to tell his medical stories at schools, businesses, and hospitals. Dr. Carson dedicated over 20 years of his career operating on the brains of children and in the process, he wrote several books. In 2012, he gained an interest in politics, published the book America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great. In 2013, he officially retired as a surgeon and worked at Fox News and in 2014 published another book, which was a New York Times bestseller, One Nation: What We Can All Do To...
