d”. In modern Arabic, the term “Jihad” is usually referred to as the meaning of the Holy war, which is also referred to as fight and battle. However, in the religious sense, “Jihad” is a term that has multiple meanings, which can be traced back to the Qur'an and Muhammad. As has been aforementioned, the first use of the term “Jihad” can be traced back into the Meccan period. According to the website Encyclopedia Britannica “Jihad”, “the emphasis was on the internal dimension of jihad...which refers to the practice of “patient forbearance” by Muslims in the face of life’s vicissitudes and toward those who wish them harm” (“Jihad”). In fact, when the concept of the “Sabr” was used in jihad, it was translated as “endurance" or "tenacity”. Later, during the Medinan period, when Muhammad “received new Qurʾānic revelations at Medina”, a new meaning of the “Jihad” had emerged: “fighting in self-defense against the aggression of the Meccan persecutors, termed qital” (“Jihad”). In other words, the term “Jihad” started to shift its meaning of “internal spiritual struggle” to the “physical struggle with the sword”.
