Personal Essay - My Journey to the Nursing Profession

It was on March 9, 1956, when Gail Rosenberg was welcomed into this world. At a very young age, Gail knew that she loved helping people. When she was a teenager, she spent most of her time cleaning, cooking, working on her schoolwork, and taking care of her ill mother so her father could work to support the family. She didn’t mind helping around the house. Little did she know, she would soon be taking care of people inside a hospital.
“When I was younger all I could think about was going to college,” Gail said. Her mother had always been on top of her with her schoolwork. Once she graduated high school, she became a college student. During her time in college, she became pregnant with her first child. Becoming pregnant was one of the many hardships she had during her time in college. She, unfortunately, she was in an abusive relationship. He was an alcoholic and couldn’t keep his job. “I had to drop out of college and get a job to help my family,” she said. “How is it possible for me to stay in school when I have to pay bills and take care of my family?” Gail wondered. Gail, after 3 years, left the abusive man and took her child to be on her own.
The struggles of being a single mom made it hard on Gail. She had to move back in with her parents to be able to provide for her child. Over the next few years, she met a new man. This relationship was much healthier than the first one. Both Gail and her partner had owned a couple of businesses, and she thought life was “Not perfect, but pretty stable,” she said. Her son grew up and was out of the house, and this was when things began to change. Richard, Gail’s husband, started drinking a lot. He always drank, but never like this. Again, Gail put up with this for many years before realizing that she was wasting her time with Richard. She knew she had to do something for the better. Gail separated from her second husband at the age of forty and decided to go back to colle...
