Communication and a Non-Verbal Analysis

Ninety-three percent of communication is nonverbal. Research has shown that communication between people is largely conveyed through nonverbal cues such as space (proxemics), touch (haptics), gestures, body movement (kinesics), voice volume, facial expressions etc. Because only seven percent of our conversation is verbal, we tend to have an increased awareness of nonverbal communication; when we ask someone how they are doing and they say ‘I’m fine’ but are frowning, we recognize that everything might not be ‘fine’ based on the contradicting nature of the frown and the words. Nonverbal communication is critical to our understanding of other’s thoughts and emotions. This paper will analyze different types of nonverbal communication such as proxemics, territoriality, and body movement within a public setting by observing its application in a real-life situation.
I chose to observe people at the gym, and the formation of different relationships within this structure. This observation occurred early in the evening in middle of the week; it is important to note that this session took place when only one gym was functioning, which means that there was more activity going on than usual. When I walk into the gym, the familiar scent of sweat permeates my nose, and I can hear the rhythmic sounds of the clanging of machines. As I walk through the sea of people who are mostly students, I plug in my earphones with music blaring so loud it drowns out the sounds around me allowing me to focus on the actions of people about me.
As I work out, people around me do the same but I notice two individuals in particular; a young lady and a man. I will name the young man Jason and the young woman Ally; Jason is across the gym doing arm curls while Ally is near me doing squats on the machine.
