Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers

Falling in love has been a part of our lives since we can remember. The joy of finding that special person to share your dreams and thoughts with, to grow old with and to establish a family with. But with all the good that comes with falling in love, there is also some difficulty of trying to identify the type of person you should be. Television portrays men and women differently when it comes to relationships. Men are expected to be the heroes and warriors of the relationship, “Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers is an example of this. The video opens with a boy wearing a superhero suit against a starry background which provides us with a window into his dream of what he would like to be. His comparisons to the mythical gods and superheroes of today is a glimpse to what society has expected men to be. Heroes with superpowers that can overcome everything that is placed in their path. That in order to be loved by another, one must possess these qualities in order to succeed in the relationship. What we fail to see and understand is that what we view on television is a mere script to a fantasy world that in reality does not exist. One does not need to be the savior of all but simply be the person that their partner can depend on. Throughout the song, the Chainsmokers reference the different superheroes that the main character compares himself to without being able to find his fit. As in the following verse, “I've been reading books of old, the legends and the myths, the testaments they told, the moon and its eclipse, and Superman unrolls, a suit before he lifts, but I'm not the kind of person that it fits.” (Something Just Like You). The Chainsmokers, with their childlike video, do a great job of making the viewer feel as though they are going through the same emotions and thoughts.
The song opens with the references to Achilles, Hercules and our superheroes Spiderman and Batman. Here the songwriter states...
