The short story of The Tell-Tale Heart is a very suspenseful and dark-toned kind of story that is written by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is about a crazy man, who is also the narrator that is taking care of an old man and describing how his “evil” eye bothered him so much that it drove him to kill the man. This story has a narrator who’s bothered by an old man’s eye, the theme of how a person’s guilty conscience can overcome them, and symbolism of the old man’s beating heart.
Edgar Allen Poe really outdid himself on this short story he had a narrator who was so bothered by an old man’s eye and the confusing part is that the narrator mentioned that he “loves” the old man but came to the conclusion that his eye haunted him day and night, so he had to get rid of the old man. He waited and watched the old man for seven days straight as the old man was in his room, and on the eighth night, he murdered the man at night with his mattress. How could you “love” somebody but murder them because of their eye? One may think that is the reason, but maybe it was because he didn’t want the old man around, and making that kind of excuse made him feel better about the situation. “You should have seen how wisely I proceeded- -with what caution- -with what foresight- -with that dissimulation I went to work”. One cannot possibly say these kinds of words and be as motivated to kill someone because of their eye, no that is someone who wants to get rid of a person because their presence is not wanted.
It took eight days for the narrator to complete the deed, but maybe it was his guilty conscience overcoming him and making him realize that what he is about to do is not a valuable reason to murder someone. The nights that the narrator watched the old man as he slept and had many opportunities just to go ahead and do the deed, but since the old man’s eye wasn’t open, he just couldn’t pull through with it, and maybe that’s whe...
