In the 1850s the civil war strayed attention from the women’s rights movement. After the war, however, the 14th and 15th amendments initiated questions about voting and citizenship. Many suffragettes believed that these amendments were their chance to convince legislators to make suffrage universal. Advocators such as Susan B. Anthony believed that the time has come to push women’s way to suffrage through politics and lawmakers. Unfortunately, Congress denied the activists’ requests and even sided with racist southerners to get support. As a result, in 1869, the National Woman Suffrage Association was formed in order to fight towards a universal suffrage amendment. However, they were allied with racist southerners who used the movement to oppress African-American rights movements at the time. With the beginning of the 20th century, an uprising of protest for the cause of women’s rights brought reforms that changed society’s view of women and their capabilities. The first step towards liberation for women was the unanimous achievement of suffrage. A newspaper article written in 1911 discussed how the government reacted to the suffragette movement, encouraged creating a suffragette movement starting at home and in local communities, and the reasons why women’s suffrage will be beneficial to all kinds of women.
