Lia Mills Versus the Pro Choice Movement

Ever since the Supreme Court decision of Roe V. Wade in 1973, millions of abortions have occurred in the United States. From 1973 to 2011 exactly 53.35 million abortions had occurred (Abort73). That is millions of children who never even got the chance to live and about 53.35 women who may have faced horrible effects, both mentally and sometimes physically. In 2009, twelve-year-old Lia Mills felt compelled to speak out against abortion in hopes to save lives and aid the millions of women who could potentially face such effects, she went against the advice of the authorities in her life such as her teacher to do so. Lia participated in a school competition to do a video speech and it quickly went viral gaining a million views and counting, she started speaking at conventions and continues to post videos and speak for the pro-life movement. Lia realized the importance of the situation and became extremely passionate about the issue. She stated, “If an action is unjust it needs to be illegal and it has to be our business” (Mills). Lia easily draws attention simply because of the fact she is addressing a controversial, mature issue at such a young age; additionally, she uses rhetorical devices such as pathos, logos, character, and ethos to construct a strong, effective argument and fight for the pro-life movement.
When addressing the difficult topic of abortion Lia tends to develop several characters. She begins her argument by presenting a hypothetical situation with the audience individuals as a direct target in order for them to feel vulnerable to the serious issue. She states “What if I told you that right now someone was choosing if you were going to live or die? What if I told you that you could do nothing about it?” This is intended to resonate with the pathos of the audience (Mills).
