The idea of the devil being in communication with this Indian is a misunderstanding and could have been stretched in a way to put fear in the minds of the Spaniards and eventually persuade other colonizers that the Indians are being controlled by the devil and the idea of the Indians being savages would be set in stone. This lack of negotiation between the Indians and the Spaniards led to the belief that the Spaniards were indeed superior because they were driven by Christianity and holy and rightful entity. Although the Indians were being unjust they were just trying to stay in touch with their culture. The Indians' oppression forced them to fight back and do what was necessary to go back to their normal lives and religious practices. The superior and inferior relationship between these two groups led to religious statues being burned and torn down, along with Spaniards being killed.
This is not the only instance of oppression that was brought on by Euro Americans. The Manifest Destiny played a major role in writing the narrative stating Euro Americans or Anglo- Saxon owns the Western land. Johns Gast's painting “American Progress” (1872) deceives this perfectly by the orientation of light and dark. The right side of the painting depicts the east where the colonizers have already been and had created their lives and are moving towards the left of the painting which represents the Western land. The left side of the painting has a very gloomy demeanor and shows Indians running away. The painting not only symbolizes the east and the west but represents the Euro Americans as this enlightened power and depicts the Indians...
