The Representation of Women: Rosie the Riveter and Lilith

There are a few images of women I’d like to discuss on what they can choose to represent, or whether man decides to represent for them. The first to relate to the text would have to be Rosie the Riveter. It’s the most iconic picture of women’s strength in that time in history. Another I’d like to dive into is Lilith, the first wife of Adam. Not for religious reasons, but what she represents for women everywhere. God portrayed her as non-yielding and disobedient. Also, when I googled “Women and Representation” the very first picture to pop up was a man bending a woman over to spank her, and to let her know her place in this world. Now I’m not saying the representation of women in society is all bad, as I’ve suggested Rosie as the amazing movement of women in a world where women weren’t respected as much as they should. They wanted to be heard, and they made it happen. That picture of the woman flexing is something recognizable to anyone who sees it.
In World War II, a cause came about to support to the working women of the war. The reason for Rosie the Riveter was to shed light on the women factory workers that donated their time and strength to contribute to the war’s cause. While in the Depression, women may have been asked to stay out of the job scene, but as the men began to deploy for the war women began to fill in for them in the working field. They were doing everything such as operating cranes and heavy machinery. That’s right around the time when Norman Rockwell decided to post a strong version of what they portray a working woman to be. Part of the lyrics of the Rosie the Riveter song goes as follows: “There’s a girl who’s really putting them to shame – Rosie is her name.” (Collins, p.381)
