In the early 1930s, Germany was in turmoil. The economic depression had hit the country drastically and unemployment rates were soaring. Due to the loss of World War 1, citizens were in societal chaos. The majority of Germans lost confidence in the Weimar Republic; their current government. Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, commonly known as The Nazi Party, attracted many Germans looking for a capable leader. Hitler used effective strategies like propaganda and false promises to gain his following. The rise of Hitler wasn’t inevitable, but with the conditions Germany was residing in, Nazis took control.
The Nazi Party was founded in 1919, at first it was a small party. Within the same year, Hitler became a Nazi. The Party was characterized by extreme nationalism rooted from antisemitism. The Nazi Party’s policies were deliberately vague for the purpose of appealing to as many Germans as possible. Hitler became utterly obsessed with the Nazi party after he discovered their existence. After appointing himself leader, he began to attract more members from all sides of the political parties. Nazis radiated strength and power upon voters, which is what Germany was lacking in their country. This implied to the people that Hitler was a prosperous leader. The Nazis began to campaign vigorously. Information about what the Nazis represented was effectively spread by the Party’s propaganda efforts. According to Abel, a young boy growing up in Nazi, Germany, in the The Story of a Middle-Class Youth, “Uniformed men came, flanked by marching men,” (Middle-class youth, 265). The Nazis used multiple strategies including radio messages, mass rallies, newspapers, posters, and speeches to become dominant. Nazi Propaganda was used to exploit citizens fear of uncertainty and instability they endure daily, causing a bond of trust and hope to the Nazi party.
