Investigation of Eisenhower's Decision to Invade Normandy

Dwight David Eisenhower was originally born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890. He was later raised in the small town of Abilene, Kansas, where he grew up in a large family, being the third of seven sons. After attending and graduating high school in 1909, Eisenhower went on to continue his education at the renowned United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. Eisenhower completed four years at the Academy and graduated in the middle of his class in 1915.1 Within the next year, he was stationed as a Second Lieutenant in San Antonio, Texas where he then met his wife, Mamie Geneva Doud. The two married in 1916 and later had two sons, one of which unfortunately died at a young age from scarlet fever. Eisenhower was originally supposed to serve in Europe during World War I but his plans later changed as the war came to an end around the time of his departure. He instead attended the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas where he graduated as the valedictorian of his class. Eisenhower was highly educated in a military background, which prepared him for what would later be his career.2
Lieutenant Eisenhower was first commissioned to serve under General John Pershing in 1927. For the next couple of years, he worked for the War Department touring and reporting to General Pershing. In 1929, Eisenhower was appointed under General Douglas MacArthur where he then served as an assistant military advisor in the Philippines from 1935 until 1939. After having a successful career under General MacArthur, new doors opened and opportunities arose for Eisenhower to make a name for himself and gain the respect of military leaders around the country. This formation of his reputation later contributed to the faith that American’s instilled in him during the turning point of World War II, which later became known as D-Day.3
