The novel Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth is centered around the main character named Jimmy and how he struggles to form a relationship with his estranged father. As a child Jimmy found comfort in a non- fictional character named Superman and used the character as a father figure he never had growing up. Also, Ware shows how the absence of Jimmy’s father leads to him developing abandonment issues. For instance, Jimmy has a hard time trusting his father and does not have healthy romantic relationships or friendships as well. Ware makes several connections to Jimmy's grandfather relationships with his own father. Certain scenes in the novel shows the issues Jimmy developed from not having a father around is a generational issue.
At the beginning of the novel the readers understand that Jimmy see’s Superman as the father he never had. There are a few scenes that shows this for example, when Jimmy sees an actor who played Superman at a car dealership, he admires him even when he sleeps with his mother. These moments are important because even though Superman let Jimmy down by sleeping with his mom, he still idolizes him. Even as an adult he still looks up to Superman, in one scene Jimmy gets hit by a truck while visiting his father. When the driver helps him off the ground, he imagines a superhero mask on the drivers face. This scene explains that Jimmy is making a connection between how Superman helps people in need and the driver helping Jimmy. His love for Superman also sheds light on how his father relationship had an impact on who he is today.
Jimmy is seen as a socially awkward person who struggles to make meaningful relationships with anyone. Ware makes it clear that Jimmy’s issues are tied to abandonment issues caused by his father not being present in his life.
