(Introduction)Do you ever wonder if our generation could cure cancer or even give a paraplegic a chance to walk again? Stem cells could be a real solution to these questions.(Thesis) In spite of the negative controversies, stem cell research can be the key to future medical success from organ regeneration to individualize cancer treatment. Stem cells can already be used to grow skin for burn victims so there is less scarring and disfigurement from skin grafts. During this speech you will understand what stem cells are, the benefits, misconceptions/myths, and why we need stem cell research.
Stem cells are unspecialized cells that can regenerate by cell division. Stem cells are like a ball of clay that hasn’t been used - it doesn’t have any special form or shape, but when someone uses it, it gets made into something specific like a cup or vase. This is like stem cells in that they can become any part of the body. Embryonic stem cells are a type of stem cell that come from and embryo. In the lab, scientists can push embryonic stem cells to become tissue or organ specific. Adult stem cells are thought to be unspecialized cells around specialized cells in organs and tissues. Stemcell.nih.gov, states,”The primary roles of adult stem cells in a living organism are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found.” Adult stem cells can be found in a lot of places is the body.
