The Pros and Cons of Alternative Medicine

There are different viewpoints of the issue of the alternative medicine. Proponents of it argue that holistic medicine is safer and more natural than conventional treatment and its efficacy has been shown through practice. Opponents claim that unconventional practices are unproven, since the number of scientific studies done so far is insufficient to examine their effectiveness, or to discover their adverse side effects. In my opinion both of the medicine has its own advantages and disadvantages.
To begin with, that we can improve our health by using alternative medicine instead the conventional treatment. I can’t help mentioning a very widespread biologically based treatment – herbal medicine – the most ancient form of medicine in the world. A great majority of long-living people still rely on it. Moreover, a quarter of our prescription drugs are derived from plants. The effectiveness of herbal remedies has been demonstrated for a variety of conditions like colds, anxiety, insomnia and nausea, among others.
In addition, nowadays the most popular is homeopathy, which is based on the principle “like cures like”. It supposes that a substance which causes symptoms in a healthy person can cure the same symptoms in someone who is sick. Using plant, animal or mineral materials, homeopaths treat ailments with very diluted doses of the substance that is responsible for a disease. For this reason side effects are rare. Homeopathy has been shown beneficial for hay fever, asthma, colds, high blood pressure, insomnia and depression. What's more, alternative medicine is less expensive than the conventional one. It meets the needs of the whole body – physical, mental and spiritual and promotes prevention through a wellness approach so the body can heal itself.
