Gender Stereotypes and Women in Leadership

Women in leadership is a controversial topic especially in today’s era due to the fact of the feminist movement and the ideas surrounding that ideal. Everything started with gender roles, male dominance and female submission, it has been seen like that since the beginning of time. Males were the ones that were working and were the higher up positions, like CEOs while women stayed at home as mothers. Male superiority contributed to the cause of the gender roles due to the fact that they play into the stereotype, also that they have the stereotype instilled in their minds. They believe that women do not have the authoritarian attitude to be bosses. The stereotypical gender roles resulted in the feminist movement, which includes women fighting for their rights to be in leaders and having equal right in general. Also, terms like the glass ceiling and sticky floor were developed due to the expectations in the workplace. Women face a lot of struggle due to the gender stereotype; they should be respected when put into a leadership role instead of being put into the stereotype of gender roles.
Many of the root causes of the stereotype of women in leadership are one’s upbringing. Men specifically are raised to strive for positions of leadership like CEO and business owners, while in contrast, girls are told to go into careers like teaching or secretarial work. From a male’s “traditional” upbringing, it can result in male superiority, in which “...females might be portrayed as manipulable and submissive, [while] males appear powerful and authoritative,” (Rouner) which also contributed to their view of women in leadership. The stereotypes are ingrained in them that women do not have the dominance to be bosses or women who are bosses are difficult and don’t have a life outside of work.
