Rarely do people get placed directly into solitary confinement but it has been done before in the past with infamous people such as Ted Karczynski the Unabomber, the shoe bomber Eric Rudolph, and Soviet spy Robert Hanssen who have all been sentenced directly in solitary confinement at ADX Florence. Solitary confinement cells are usually seven feet by twelve feet with solid metal doors with a small opening known as a “cuff port” (used to apply handcuffs and to exchange food treats), no windows and no light, containing only a concrete bed and an immoveable bed and sink/ toilet. Inmates usually are not allowed to even write to people from outside the prison unless a judge or correction officer grants them that privilege then they will be able to write and receive mail but the only downside is that the officers open everything up and read and analyze everything (Lorna A. Rhodes, Conditions Control. 30). According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, solitary confinement houses more than 80,000 men, women, children, and even mentally ill inmates all across America for several days, months or even years, and although this may seem new and intriguing it has in fact been around and going on for a long time now. Solitary confinement was first introduced in an experiment in the United States taking place at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. It was believed that inmates isolated in stone cells with only a Bible would use the time to repent, pray and find introspection, but instead many of the inmates went insane, committed suicide, or were no longer able to function in society, and the experiment was slowly abandoned during the following decades (Sullivan, Laura. 2006). in 1934 the Federal government opened “Alcatraz” in San Francisco Bay to house the nation’s worst criminals, in fact it was the first prison to operate a solitary confinement facility in America, as Alcatraz prisoners spen...
