t most of their time outside in the yard on required work details, few of them were kept in “D Block” which was known as the prisons solitary confinement hallway and a cell feared by many inmates known as “The Hole” (room made of concrete with a single hole in the floor). Alcatraz eventually closed its doors in 1963 because its operating expenses were much higher than those of other federal facilities at the time (History.com).
