Prenatal care is important in reducing risks for the infant. The World Health Organization states: “Within the continuum of reproductive health care, antenatal care (ANC) provides a platform for important health-care functions, including health promotion, screening and diagnosis, and disease prevention. It has been established that by implementing timely and appropriate evidence-based practices, ANC can save lives” (2016). Data has shown countless times that early access in pregnancy to antenatal care can significantly reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome secondary to alcohol and tobacco, neural tube defects, fetal alcohol syndrome and reduce complications secondary to chronic conditions or gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (National Institute of Health, 2016). Ultrasound, blood tests, glucose tolerance test and then further genetic testing if needed can all help to prevent or mitigate adverse perinatal outcomes (Wong, Perry, Hockenberry, Lowdermilk, Wilson,. pp214., 2006).
